On the casting of Christian Grey, Ana Steele...and Scarlett O'Hara!!!

Casting the characters for the movie version of Fifty Shades of Grey was always going to be fraught–with such a passionate and vocal fan base. I wonder how E.L. James braced herself. I pictures a few belts of scotch, one of the producers on the phone, the screenwriter on speaker, she presses ‘tweet’ on her computer with the same nervy determination of a president pressing a doomsday button.

“There. Okay…here we go.”

They knew there’d be dissenters, but even I was stunned by the negative reactions, most laced with the language of betrayal and heartbreak. A petition even went up on Change.org, garnering thousands of signatures overnight, calling for the casting of fan favorites Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel, as though they’d been waiting in the wings for fans to change the filmmakers’ minds.

Casting is a top secret, highly political dance. Having only been involved on a TV level, (and only reality TV at that), I can only imagine what strings are pulled, schedules are shuffled and favors are promised at that level in Hollywood to secure any stars in any movie, let alone a franchise as big as this. I do know this: if they weren’t perfect for the part, if they didn’t blow away the director AND Ms. James—who had full say in the selection—they wouldn’t have been chosen.

For the record, I think they’re both excellent choices, precisely because they are not what I expected. These are risky choices. But this is a ballsy franchise. After all, the book itself is popular because it took readers places they didn’t expect, made them consider things they’d never considered before and charged their imaginations in ways they couldn’t do on their own.

Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson are perfect for the parts precisely because they’re not imprinted on readers’ imaginations. Fans, instead of rejecting these choices should consider rejoicing in a chance to experience the thrill of the book all over again—with new eyes, new reactions and new experiences.

I hope the filmmakers take comfort in this: America when into paroxysms when it was announced that their beloved Scarlett O’Hara from “Gone With the Wind” would be played by an unknown British stage actress named Vivien Leigh. She’s not American! She’s too pretty! She has dark red hair! She’s too old! No!!! Fans of the book wanted Bette Davis who would become synonymous with ‘Southern Belle’ after “Jezebel” was released in 1938. But that’s precisely why she wasn’t cast; she’d already played that part. Too many people had imagined her as Scarlett. There’d be no surprise. Fine, fans said, what about Katherine Hepburn? She’d be perfect. She’s thin, imperious, head strong! That too was a no-go, mostly for a perceived lack of chemistry between her and Clark Gable. Even Lucille Ball was considered. The producers remained firm: Vivien Leigh was their perfect Scarlett. The proof would be on the big screen.

And it was.

Can you imagine anyone other than Vivien Leigh in that role? I bet fans will be saying the same thing about the actors playing Ana and Christian. Which brings me to my final point: not many actors or actress would welcome the baggage that comes with taking on these iconic roles. Yeah, maybe your favorites weren’t cast in the film, but how do you know they even wanted the parts? They might be doing their own private celebratory dance and breathing a collective sigh of relief. I say keep an open mind; this cast has just added a few more interesting shades to the story.

Charity I agree with you! Though I never had a clue who I'd want to play these characters, I am excited to see how well the books are portrayed in the movie. That's my biggest fear....a movie not holding up to the book it was created from. I kinda like the fact they are using some underdogs for the role. What a great opportunity for them!

Was there seriously a Change.org petition? Man...fans be crazy sometimes! :)

Jocelin This is just like "Twilight" all over again. Many people were outraged when Robert Pattinson was cast as Edward Cullen. When I heard the news I was like good for him. At that time, I had not read Twilight so I guess I couldn't accurately gage his look. I thought that Robert had appeal as Cedric Diggory in "The Goblet of Fire". Once he was cast and they saw the chemistry between he and Kristen Stewart, everyone changed their minds and loved him. You should have heard the cheers erupt at the end of Breaking Dawn Part 2 when his picture flashed across the screen. Personally, I am glad that they stuck with a British actor. I don't think that Matt Bomer would have had the chops to pull it off. Would have liked to have seen Henry Cavill take a stab at the role (he's hot!) Charlie Hunnam is a cutie & British! He did a great job in "Pacific Rim" this summer. I wish he and Dakota Johnson much success with this movie.

I can understand why people can get invested in characters, they become personal and real. Its fun to see how people react to casting choices of "movies made from books". This is what is so great about reading the written word; you have started "world-building" in your mind. When you do see the finished product; was it just like how you pictured it?

P.S. E.L. James wanted Robert Pattinson for the role of Christian Grey. I guess that makes sense, since this series was based off Twilight fan fiction.

yes--there is a petition...thankfully Henry Cavill himself made a statement thanking fans for the support but that he's also looking forward to Dakota and Charlie's performances....a gentleman.

Jocelin Well, there is more drama surrounding who will play Christian Grey in "50 Shades of Grey". Charlie Hunnam has left the production siting scheduling conflicts for the movie and his show "Sons of Anarchy". For what ever reason I have been watching this play out in entertainment news. There were various reports stating the former (scheduling conflicts) then, I hear he just got cold feet because of the how the character is so beloved by many fans & how they did not want him to play the character. Then I heard that he wasn't prepared to play the role and so forth. Then I heard a story that really sounded like it made sense: because he is a writer (didn't know that; and a cutie to boot) he wasn't satisfied with the way Christian was written. He felt that the character lacked depth and wanted to punch up the script himself. There was a lot of back and forth, then he decided to call it quits. I can understand if you see where there's a problem with the writing, you want to make it better. I can see if you want to make the character come to life and be a rich multi-layer creation that speaks to the audience.
I think if the role didn't feel right to him; he should have left. It definitely would have shown up in the film. You do want an actor that captures the essence of character.
If anyone asks, Matt Bomer DOES NOT WANT the role of Christian Grey. I heard that a couple of other actors are vying for the role now. I think that should give it to someone that is not really well known. I heard that Jamie Dorner (the hot sheriff from Season 1 of "Once Upon A Time") is a contender for the role. I think he would be good he's hot & British!
I think the casting of "50 Shades of Grey" will probably be more interesting than the actual movie. There is so much drama surrounding it. Someone should do a docuseries about it. Those are just my thoughts.

Nina Jocelin, I agree with you. I think it's the latter. I think because Charlie is a writer, he saw the problems within the script and wanted to fix them. I don't think that sat well with producers and they probably gave him an option to get out of the movie. Also, reports state that they hired another writer to help "polish" the script, which they hired this person a couple of days before Charlie's announcement. I hate the gossipy side of this but I have to say, if Charlie was tweeking the script and the studio hired another writer then something is terribly wrong. And I agree also that the shenanigans of casting will prove more interesting than the movie. I will see the movie but if there in this much turmoil before shooting a single scene then what in the world is the movie going to be like? We shall see...

L. Adeline I think it's all so interesting. But no matter what, the movie will be a massive commercial success...my shock came from how little he was being paid. 150k?? I REALLY hope they promised him some of the box office percentages. That doesn't seem like enough to offset how identified he'll always be with that character and how difficult it would be to get other work...we shall see....

Indeed. My mouth dropped when I saw the report about 150k and actually, I thought about the fact that he might get the back end profit-sharing. As you stated, any way you cut it, the movie will be a commercial success because 70 million people bought the book, we can be sure that "some" of those folks will go see the movie. And yes, whoever plays that part will forever be that part and will find it difficult to be identified as anything else. The same goes for Dakota Johnson, who by the way I think will be a great Anastasia Steele Grey. Though I was not a huge fan of her writing persay I fell in love with the love story aspect and am looking forward to see how they translate that into the film.

Jocelin Update: Just found out that Jamie Dornam (The hot sheriff from "Once Upon A Time season 1) will be playing Christian Grey.

Yes, just found out. I don't know, I liked Charlie Hunnam better. There was something about Charlie. This will be very interesting. Guess we'll all see in August. I tell you though, I think Dakota Johnson is going to knock it out the park!

L. Adeline Agreed! I wouldn't underestimate Dakota

Jocelin I am really hoping now that this movie will be a box office smash. With all the problems this production has endured; hope it's a worldwide phenomenon!

Oh, it will be! There's no doubt that everybody whether they were critical or not will line up to see the movie. It's what they say afterwards that will be interesting.

Jocelin You are absolutely right Marlena. I can't wait for the reviews. You know when they start casting for "S.E.C.R.E.T." I hope they make this big of a fuss over who will be cast. ;-)
