Putting Yourself Out There

I haven't posted in a while, because in the last month, I did three things that scared the hell out of me, and I needed time to process before I blogged about it. Because putting yourself out there, doing what is so uncomfortable and scary and important and valuable is the holy grail for writers.

It's all very well to sit at a computer and send emails out to bloggers. Or to post on your Facebook page or tweet about the latest book you're working on. Or to write blog posts.

But going to events ...

Sean McCartney Dear Ms. Wheeler,

Congrats on getting out there. It is very, in fact beyond, scarey. How did it go? It looks good.

Jacquelyn Hi Sean,

It was great fun, thanks! The staff at B&N were wonderful, and I had a nice little crowd despite the gorgeous weather outside and the World Cup. A really good day all around.

Cheers,
Jacquelyn

Sean McCartney Dear Ms. Wheeler,

My book was just release on July 6th and I went to a B&N to talk about a signing and I wasn't treated all that good. It was kinda a blow off. I am wokring with a small publisher and it seems most people don't want to work witht hem. Not sure why. I will try agin though based on your experience.

Sean

Jacquelyn It can be very challenging to get a signing if your book isn't something they carry in stock. Ask your publisher to go through the process of applying to have your book carried through the small publisher division. (There are details on the B&N web site, I believe.) You might be better off with an indie bookstore. Be ready to explain your marketing strategy for how you will get people to come to the signing, as promotion is completely up to you. Good luck!
