This is one of the best things I've read on the Internet in a while about life in the writing world, and one of the reasons it makes me sad when you call yourself 'not a writer'. You're pretty dang awesome, Ash--and there are wise words here.

I couldn't agree with this more if I tried. As a writer you will always have bad reviews but for people to be so horrible about it for no good reason and not even CONSIDER the effort that went into it on the authors behalf pisses me off. This is why I feel sorry for EL James, SOME may hate it but SOME love it so just leave the poor woman be!
I think there's a difference between wishing bodily harm on an author and expressing extreme distaste and/or disdain for said author's work. I dislike Fifty Shades even more than I disliked Twilight (as a book series--I found the films tolerable). Don't feel sorry for EL James; she's rich, which was precisely her goal.
I'd only like to say that if you are going to give a one star rating you should give a review and tell us why. IN fact you should not be allowed to give either one star or five star without writing a review of minimum, say, 100 words. This would go a long way to preventing trolls who are one starring books they haven't even read because they don't like the author's shoes or something, AND authors padding their ratings by getting friends and random people to rate their books five.

Angelhorn wrote: "trolls who are one starring books they haven't even read because they don't like the author's shoes or something"Absolutely true. Someone one-starred a book of my dad's a few months ago, before he'd even sent any copies to anybody! When he complained, Goodreads staff said there were two purposes to the ratings system: 1 - rating books you'd read for their quality, and 2 - sorting out books you personally *wanted* to read from those you didn't.
Presumably that particular rating was in category 2, as nobody had actually read it yet. But there's no way for a potential reader to tell: a bad rating is a bad rating, end of! Why they don't offer SEPARATE rating schemes beats me.
I agree with most everything you've written, the only exception being that readers don't appreciate the effort that goes into a book. Perhaps not all readers do, but almost all authors understand, and they're all readers too. And even some readers who haven't tried writing a novel before still appreciate what hard work it is.As for the idea of everyone having to give a review for books 1 star or 5 star, I don't really like that idea. I don't give a review to every book I read, in fact I don't give reviews to the majority. It's in part because I have other stuff to do, but also because sometimes I struggle to think of how I felt. I only write a review if I have felt strongly about a book, which surely falls under the category of 1 or 5 stars, you might argue, but actually even then I sometimes struggle to come to terms with what I think about a particular book.
While reviews are what any author hopes for, I also think that readers have a choice, and that choice should be respected, whether or not they want to write why they did or did not like it. And that freedom is honestly more important than tending to writer's egos (which is all it is sometimes--I am a writer, so I know all about my ego especially :P).
A guy I knew in person wrote a book and I read it and gave it 2-stars which I thought was generous, and that caused me to be banned from his home.
The only reason I write reviews is for myself. I use the rating system for 3 reasons 1. to know that I read a particular book 2. to remind myself what the book was about and my feelings on said book and 3. whether I would like to read anything else from that author. I really hope authors aren't out there reading my crappy, 4 sentence reviews because they aren't going to get anything constructive out of it.
This squares exactly with what I said earlier. People are using the rating system for two different purposes, and they're also interpreting it in different ways. But the way that it's used is not always the way that's interpreted. So one of these things happens:1. Someone reviews a book for their own personal records. Others read it and think it's a public review. (This isn't too bad)
or 2. Someone rates a book according to their desire to read it - i.e. the cover, title and blurb. Others see the book's overall rating and assume it comes from readers who've genuinely read it. (Which can be disaster if the rating is bad).
*sigh*. Why on earth aren't there two rating systems? It wouldn't be that hard to implement.
I plan on celebrating the first bad review I get. Because although it's gonna hurt, it's constructive criticism that will help me improve my writing.
More to the point, if people are rating and reviewing for their own purposes only then why are they publishing their ratings? Maybe Goodreads should have a private setting for people who can't quite grasp why these things matter to authors' bank accounts and not just their egos.So perhaps you can rate a book 1 star or 5 star but your ratings only get published if you also review.
Everybody has an opinion these days. Jeesh.
I believe in worlds where everybody respects everybody and we go by the rule of live and let live. However, that's not the world we live in. While I completely agree that going after reviewers (even worse, stalking and threatening them) is bad, I also think reviewing anything but a book you're read is wrong. Sure, we should take the reviews as they come. Sure, authors should try to get Goodreads to filter book reviews from "I hate the author cause she/he is too tall." But we should do it in a respectful, caring way. Cause that's how we want to be treated, isn't it? And now I'll go feed my unicorn :D
Angelhorn wrote: "I'd only like to say that if you are going to give a one star rating you should give a review and tell us why. Give an explanation. When I rate a book, I tend to disregard the one in a one to five rating. There is good in every book. Whether it is the general concept, or even a singular character, there is a little bit of good in even the most horrible of books.

What is the name of your father's book?
