Flirting With Destiny Q&A
My newest book, FLIRTING WITH DESTINY, is out now and this is my sixth book in my “Welcome to Destiny: where fate leads to falling in love” series. Here are a few Q&As about Devlin and Tanya's story!* Where did you get the idea for FLIRTING WITH DESTINY?
When I was writing my earlier books in the series I knew I wanted to have a family of many sons (since “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” is one of my all-time favorite movies!) So I came up with the Murphys, who have six sons—five of which were single…until I wrote a happily-ever-after for the eldest brother, Adam Murphy, in HAVING ADAM’S BABY (Apr 2012). It was in that book that readers met his family, including Devlin Murphy, the hero of FLIRTING WITH DESTINY. Because of the way HAVING ADAM’S BABY ended, poor Devlin had a tough road ahead of him and I knew I had to find the right lady to help him!
* Tell us about the hero of the book? Why will we fall in love with him?
A true middle child (the third of six boys) and thanks to his Irish heritage, Dev is a natural born charmer whose always relied on his good looks and great smile to get out of trouble. He’s also a recovering alcoholic, but that hasn’t slowed down this fun loving guy when it comes to the ladies. What has put his social life on hold is the horrific crash in the company helicopter he was in eight months ago. He considers himself as healed as he’s going to get, even if it’s not one hundred percent and his volunteer firefighting days are over. So his choices at this point are to accept his limitations and move on with this life or taking a chance on the alternative methods performed by a woman who strikes a familiar chord deep inside him.
* Tell us about the heroine?
Tanya Reeves is a bit of a wild child! She left home at seventeen, was married and divorced before her 21st birthday and before she got on track with her current career as an Acupuncturist/Chinese Herbalist/Massage Therapist, she was a showgirl in Reno! She thought she’d finally settled down with a great job and a great guy, but life has a way of throwing curves at us all and Tanya is still recovering from a bruised heart and ego. She thinks she’s found a new start at a school in London, where she’s heading after a quick stay in Destiny. Then she runs into Devlin Murphy…again!
* What life lessons do Devlin and Tanya learn before they can find their happily-ever-after?
Dev needs to learn that life doesn’t always so easy. Yes, he knows about hard work but a person needs to be willing to see that they might be more than one way of getting from point A to point B and that taking a chance can be a good—no, a great thing!! Tanya needs to learn to trust her judgment again. She got burned pretty bad a few months ago but a guy she thought was “the one” so she’s been licking her wounds and trying to set things right. All of which makes her feelings for Devlin even more scary!
* What was your favorite scene to write?
I love the scenes at the fitness center. It starts with Dev in the pool with the “Wet Nanas”, that leads into the first kiss, Dev’s injury flaring up and him finally remembering why Tanya seems so familiar to him! So much fun putting my hero through all of that!
* What do you feel are some of your strengths as a writer and how did those show up in this particular book?
Not sure if it’s a strength or not, but I love writing scenes with family members! It was so much fun to have Dev interact with his brothers! Growing up with only sisters, I don’t have that history, but after serving in the military and working in male dominated fields, I think I’ve got a good grasp on the male species! Or at least how I like to see them in the fictional world!
* Is there an underlying theme to the story?
Never give up! There is always a way to get to the finish line…be it with your health, or your heart or your career…and sometimes it’s okay to ask for and accept help from others in order to get there!
FLIRTING WITH DESTINY is my 10th book published since I sold my first back in 2006 and without the help of my family, and the great friends I’ve made in the romance writing community, I would never have reached this milestone! I have been so blessed with the terrific people in my life…from my critique partners and the member of my local RWA chapter, New Hampshire Romance Writers to my wonderfully supportive husband, daughter and stepchildren.
