The End

I have taken some of criticism about the end of Screenshot. At first, I was inclined to reject that as an exception, someone who didn't read the book attentively and missed the nuance. In fact, I still believe that is the case for the first reader who disliked the ending. But then several others said similar things, and I came to understand that they weren't reading the same ending that I was. For them, the book didn't end at the climactic scene, but at the last page.

I worked very hard on my ending for the book. That was the scene in Screenshot's lair and the extended battle of wits and weapons that took place. (I'm trying not to include any spoilers for anyone who hasn't read the book.) I actually learned about endings from Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. They are masters of dragging the climax through page after compelling page, and I tried to do something similar with my first book, The Law of the Pack, and with Screenshot. When it should have been over, it wasn't.

The issue with Screenshot was that for me the book ended in Screenshot's lair, with bodies scattered around in various stages of dying or death. I knew in my head what happened to all the characters after that, and it just wasn't very important to me after the excitement of the climax. I didn’t think it would be to the reader, either, and wrapped it up with one scene weeks in the future that accounted for all those bodies on the floor of Screenshot's lair. That was a mistake and unfair to the readers.

If I ever get the chance to do a second edition of Screenshot, there will be a different ending. If you message me, I'll put you on the list to get the revised e-book for free if it ever happens.
