Top 10 Happiness Tips

In the process of writing Happiness: A New Perspective I read a huge number of scientific studies about happiness. On the back of this research, here are my top 10 happiness tips:

1. Look After Your Body - Feeling tired or hungry brings most people down. Regular exercise has been shown to generate an uplift in happiness levels.

2. See Beauty in Daily Life - The world is a remarkable place and there is fantastic beauty in even the most mundane things if you open your mind to them.

3. Be Wary of Adaptation - After a while your mind becomes bored of the same stimuli, so be sure to vary your happiness inducing activities.

4. Stop Ruminating - Excessive worry is a major inhibitor of happiness. Focus on the big picture - will you still care about this on your deathbed?

5. Let Go of Anger - Prolonged anger eats you up. The longer you feel upset, the more harm you are doing yourself. What is the point in that?

6. Develop Flow at Work - Setting yourself goals and wholeheartedly engaging in them can make even the unlikeliest job extremely rewarding.

7. Ignore Social Status - Our genes encourage us to climb the social ladder, but often at the expense of engaging in activities we would enjoy far more.

8. Relationships Matter - Good relationships generate much happiness. They are worth the effort and sacrifice they sometimes involve.

9. Happiness is Not a Destination - Do not continually re-assess how happy you are. It can, and often does, arrive when least expected.

10. Define Your Own Life Meaning - Only by deciding for yourself what is worth valuing in life can you be truly happy.
