Dr. Pe're held out the promise of gaining control, learning to cope. He would listen to Dr. Pe're, he decided. Tell him what he wanted to know. Follow his advice and directions. He wouldn’t resist anymore. The pain was too great, and he didn’t know how to make it go away by himself.
Father McTighe’s words and teachings sure hadn’t helped. They couldn’t help him overcome his cold, unfeeling mother. They didn’t protect him when Rachel Feinberg made him the laughingstock of the entire school. They didn’t keep him from getting screwed by Katie and Veronica. They couldn’t even comfort him when he lost his father.
Jimmy closed his eyes, moving seamlessly from the blackness of his dark room to the blackness of his inner mind. I’ve got the opportunity, he thought, and I’m going to take it. It’s time to turn to a real professional. God, I hope you can help me, Dr. Pe're. I don’t want to hurt anymore.
He rolled onto his left side. It was time to go to sleep, he decided. For the first time, he looked forward to the next day’s session with Dr. Pe're.
