The Twelve Days of Christmas

An excerpt from Wray.......

When stinky bastard had stuffed her into this cabinet, she hadn't even cared. If she’s in here, he couldn’t hurt her. The shudder she’d felt minutes before was unimportant. It was time to die.

The sound of growls covered the hissing-clicking of stinky bastard and drew her attention.

Growls, now there was something new. It reminded her dog, Warrior.  Her parents had been promising her one for years and finally for her tenth birthday she’d called them on it.  So they’d gone down to the public shelter that had recently broken up a puppy mill but it hadn’t been one of the puppies that she’d fallen in love with, it had been the massive dog caged all by itself.

They’d discovered him at the same mill.  It seemed the owners had been breeding fight dogs along with the shih tzu’s. Warrior had been used to sire them, he had been a hundred and twenty pounds of solid muscle and fierce looking. Everyone had been terrified of him. Everyone but Kim. Maybe it because she’d never been harmed in her life, maybe it was her age but for some reason she had just known he’d never hurt her. So she had opened his cage and promptly sat down, waiting for him to come to her.

Her parents and the workers had gone crazy, sure he would attack and kill her. He had growled and snarled at her, taking two steps forward then quickly backing away, his massive body quivering. When she had held out her hand, he’d flinched, as if he expected her to strike him, when she didn’t, he moved a little closer, baring sharp teeth.

Kim had looked into his gray eyes and seen the truth.  He was scared.  This massive dog was scared of her, that she’d hurt him.  She quietly promised him that he’d always be safe with her, that he’d never be hurt again. When she petted him, he licked her hand then rolled onto his back, begging her to scratch his belly and she realized all he wanted was for someone to care for him, to see him, to love him and Kim had.
