A mild rant on a review

One of the reader’s reviews on Amazon complained that volume II was boring: just a record of the life of a Regency gentleman. This, I assume, is about the views we have of him at Pemberley and in London, deciding what to do about Georgiana and the dinner, taking care of Sayers, the builder’s son, deciding the fate of Haydn the footman, etc. The reviewer missed a couple of important points, though, I believe. First, Austen tells us that this is who Darcy is, when Elizabeth thinks: “As a brother, a landlord, a master, she considered how many people’s happiness were in his guardianship!” But from my standpoint, it was more important to show how he could have the gall to mess with Bingley’s life; it wasn’t arrogant meddling, it was who he had to be, as Darcy of Pemberley—just part of his normal, daily life. As I would be hard-pressed to justify doing something like that myself, I had to figure out how Darcy, for all of his intelligence, awareness, and good intentions, could do so without feeling like the worst sort of meddler.

The dinner at Grosvenor Square was about Georgiana’ growth, and his attempts to help her along. Miss Hartsbury’s ball was about how he was dealing with his low spirits, and Bingley’s, and his good-hearted stab at helping out a girl having a bit of guy-trouble. The rest of London was devoted to his interactions with his family, and, of course, Miss Chesterton, all of which help us to understand who Darcy is as a man on the emotional level.

OK, that’s off my chest: I just didn’t like the feeling that the reviewer thought volume II was nothing but filler; and, of course, you can’t start an argument like that directly with someone who is expressing an honest opinion, but I did want to get my two cents in somewhere. Anyone else feel like throwing theirs in? It would be most welcome, I assure you. :-)

Shannon K I have Volume II now and am planning to read it while on vacation next month. I will be quite disappointed if it turns out to be anything *but* "a record of the life of a Regency gentleman" :). Darcy is so much more complex than just the interactions with Elizabeth that Austen shows us, and I can't wait to see how you flesh out his life and relationships!

Stanley Hurd Hi Shannon!

Thanks, and I hope you have a great vacation. Yeah, I don’t get how some authors can have Darcy turn into all kinds of adventurers and whatnot, then come back and be the guy Elizabeth falls in love with; and I don’t see why the path to his enlightenment as a man needs to go anywhere other than where Austen pointed him. I’ll be waiting to hear what you think of this installment!

Kellea Williams I have been on a P&P kick, and am so lucky this was on my Amazon recommendations. I downloaded a sample, and quickly bought and read both. Can't wait for #3.

Stanley Hurd Thanks so much, Kellea; I'm working on it (or I should be, instead of reading reviews and comments :-) )!

Kellea Williams I always look forward to summer in Seattle, and this will only add to my anticipation.

Melissa I read volume I in a couple of days and I am already halfway through volume II. I cannot believe that anyone would call these books boring! I absolutely love these books and am enjoying them so much. They are so well-written and true to the characters and time period! I cannot wait until volume III comes out. Have you ever thought of writing a sequel to P&P as well?

message 7: by Stanley (new)

Stanley Hurd Thanks Melissa! Do you think I should? – write a sequel, I mean. I kind of thought about maybe doing something with Colonel Fitzwilliam.

message 8: by Shannon (new)

Shannon K Oh please do! The little bit of his story and military career that you included already (early in Volume II, I think?) was tantalizing, and I'd love to read more!

message 9: by Stanley (new)

Stanley Hurd Wow, Shannon, that was quick! We do see a bit more of Colonel Fitzwilliam in volume III, and I’d sort of like to save him from becoming a stiff, crusty, old soldier; he needs a girl, I think. It might be possible to combine that with a sequel – hmm, have to think that over. Nothing is very clear right now, as I still have a ways to go to get Darcy and Elizabeth together and safely ensconced at Pemberley. But thanks for the interest!

Melissa A sequel would be great! I would love to see how you write about Darcy's impression about their first year of marriage especially. How would Darcy acclimate to being married after 28 plus years of being a bachelor? Also, in Volume II Darcy has all sorts of worries about Elizabeth not being accepted into Society. So how would all of this work out? How would he deal with his mother-in-law? etc., etc.

message 11: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Also, have you ever thought about writing a Persuasion from the perspective of Captain Wenthworth? There are a couple of "Wenthworth Diary" type books but I found them to be just terrible. I think your writing style would suit Wentworth's character as well!

message 12: by Stanley (new)

Stanley Hurd Actually, yes I have. Wentworth is a guy I relate to on many levels. I could see doing his whole story from meeting Anne, through the wars, back to Kellynch and, ultimately, Bath. Writing a sword-fight on the decks of a sloop would be tons of fun, and he has a lot of emotion to get through before he finds his way back to his beginning.

As for a sequel, I could see Darcy's time becoming so taken up by the fun he was having with Elizabeth that she needed to get his nose back to the grindstone; and she would be fun to see handling the snobs of the ton about Town. Lots of character development opportunities, but I would really want to get a solid story-line first.

Well, we'll just have to see how it all goes; but it will never go anywhere if I don't go back to work!

Bye, guys!

Stan

message 13: by Kellea (new)

Kellea Williams Some I have read have Colonel Fitzwilliam and Georgiana together, and I must admit I can see it. She needs a man she trust after her run in with Wickham.

message 14: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Well, whatever you decide to write I will definitely read! Thanks so much for all of the hours of entertainment!

message 15: by Kara (new)

Kara Clapp What a wonderful idea! I could look forward to hearing Darcy's PoV about life after Austen's P&P and also hearing Persuasion from Wentworth. Look out Stan we could keep you busy in your writing for several years if you let us ; )

But this is always with the understanding that we would support your efforts financially and not only buy all those wonderful volumes but also insist to our friends to do the same.

message 16: by Tamara (new)

Tamara I love P&P fanfiction read 43 last year! I have both your books on my reading list and will let you know once I've read them and give you a link to my blog reviews. I have heard great things and and looking forward to reading them. Truth be told i have held off reading them because If they are good ill go crazy waiting for the third. Just like Graftons & Aidan's trilogy's if I had read the first two without the third was written I would have been banging down doors lol ok maybe I can exercise patience.

AlegnaB † I discovered Darcy's Tale on Jan 1. I'm also waiting for the third book to be finished before I start them. I prefer reading book series and watching TV series after they're completed. I haven't yet read any fan fiction, but I'm looking forward to reading Darcy's Tale because it's written by a man (and the reviews are very good).

Sheila Majczan As I said in the review I posted on Amazon, I truly enjoyed all the development of Darcy's character through his thoughts and actions in Volume II. The experience with Susan Chesterton so deepened just how much he should value Elizabeth! All the views expressed to him from his mentor, Col. Fitzwilliam, Georgiana, etc. give us insight into his decision about an appropriate wife and his proposal to Elizabeth at Hunsford. This space is not large enough to go on and on. But, please know, that you have a fan in me! (Trite, I know...the song is going through my head, so couldn't help it! LOL)

message 20: by Stanley (new)

Stanley Hurd Sheila,

Thanks so much for your support, both here and on Amazon. I’m so glad you enjoy the way I portray Austen’s character (I try not to think of him as “my Darcy”, as that would be another of those arrogant presumptions).

Best,

Stan

Kellea Williams How's the book coming?

message 22: by Melissa (new)

Melissa When is Volume III coming out?? Can't wait!

message 23: by Stanley (new)

Stanley Hurd Hi Kellea and Melissa,

Thanks for checking in. I’m pretty far along; I hope to have the first complete draft in a couple of weeks, then I’ll polish it for a bit, so I expect to have it out around the middle of August, unless something strange comes up. Mostly I like what I have, although I keep changing the last proposal around. I feel like I have to write it, because JA dodged it, and it certainly it is a pivotal moment, but it is hard to be satisfied with it. And there are some letters still to write between Georgiana, and Darcy, and Darcy and Elizabeth. Colonel Fitzwilliam is back and so is Pender, Darcy and Bingley’s tutor from Oxford. We also see more of the eccentric Miss Hartsbury, and Darcy’s relations: Lady Catherine, and Lord and Lady Andover.

Anyway, thanks again—back to work, now.

Regards,

Stan

Shannon K Thanks for the update, Stan--so excited for Volume III!

message 25: by Kellea (new)

Kellea Williams So glad to hear it's coming along. Cannot wait to read it. Feel free to post a little tease like you did with the fencing scene if you feel inspired:).

message 26: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan I am also looking forward to this Volume III...just riding Shannon's and Kellea's coattails in their inquiries about how far along you are with this. I do not have any hurry as I promised myself it was for my shore vacation in early September. Good luck in your work. It is appreciated.
