War on Terror

Marvin Gaye in his seminal 1971 hit song, What's Going On, tells his listeners that "war is not the answer, only Love can conquer hate!" A message shared by the immortal Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and many other citizens of the United States of America. The song was in response to an escalating conflict in Vietnam and a response to the conflict at home, between the voices of conscience, and the status quo. The conflict unfairly targeted the underprivileged, and caused immeasurable suffering for the people of Vietnam and America. People suffering could no longer be tolerated. The song was an anthem for the feeling of desperation sweeping over the nation. It was released one year after the killing of four students at Kent State - unarmed kids protesting the war - and the witnessing of beatings of protestors at other locations. The song simply asks us to take a look around; pause, reflect, consider the situation. It is a song of hope and love. We need such a song today! It has been recently revealed at a U.S. Senate hearing, that the war powers act of 2001, authorizing the so called "War on Terror," should be amended, because the current U.S. military brains believe they will continue to fight terrorism for another 10 to 20 years. That's in addition to the previous 12 years. THIRTY YEARS of WAR! Are we sure there is no other option?
I was buying shoes at an outlet and was interested in some discount socks. The store manager was quick to point out that the Navy Seals wore the same socks, fascinating. I could wear the same socks as the Seals. I have known a couple of Navy Seals, and I believe they are a wonderful group of individuals, and impressive military men. However, the cult hero status of worship that has attached itself to professional fighters is a bit disturbing. Why not suggest that RN's wear the same socks? Nurses are on their feet long hours, which would be a great selling point for socks.
A nation that concentrates on fighting war on “ism’s” and not taking care of basic human needs; health care, education, economic stability, is a nation spending its way toward implosion. "What's Going On?"
