I read an interesting article today, that any self-published author should read. It’s about the scams, and scam companies, that are preying upon unsuspecting writers who don’t know any better. You can find it here.
In a nutshell, it’s a thorough takedown of a company called Author Solutions that offers outrageously overpriced services for the unaware. Listen, friends: there are legitimate ways to do this, without taking out a second mortgage to get your book published. In fact, it doesn’t cost anything to put it on Amazon, iBooks, Kobo, etc. Yes, you should pay for a decent cover and editing (I paid for a photographer and art director for my debut novel “Internet Kill Switch.” I did the editing myself, but that’s my field). But the prices these hustlers are charging is tantamount to robbery. Find reputable people; they’re out there. And avoid scammers. The best way to do that? It’s called Google, my friend.
And many thanks to David Gaughran for writing that illuminating article.
