Kiev Protests
Kiev protest February 2014
It is with great sadness that I must stand by and watch people with such pride and hope for Ukraine be killed or injured by their own police at the direction of their own government. I’m not sure I fully understood the words that follow until I saw the brutal images coming in from Kiev all day today.
When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.
When the government fears the people, there is liberty.
~Thomas Jefferson~
The good people of Ukraine deserve much more from their own representatives.
To the young men and women of the police and the armed forces of Ukraine I ask that you wake up tomorrow and refuse to engage in the killing of your own countrymen. They are brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, aunts and uncles and children of family’s just like your own. They share your rich history and strong family traditions.
To the protesters who have so courageously stayed the course for all the long months in the cold of winter hoping for your voices to be heard, don’t throw stones and firebombs at your friends and countrymen in uniform. Encourage them to join you. Encourage the few in the political system that don’t use words like “I, me or self” in every other sentience to join you. Ukraine has forty five million people and only one President, four hundred and fifty in Parliament and not too many Ukrainian Oligarch. If you unite they have no choice but to listen.
With respect to turning north rather than any other direction you only need to remember Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin’s campaign of genocide against Ukraine that left millions of Ukrainians dead as the world turned its back. Eighty-one years later President Vladimir Putin wants the Ukrainian people under his boot at the same time he misrepresents his intention for Ukraine and its people to the rest of the world. Sound familiar?
Seize this opportunity to rid yourselves of the dictators and the thieves steeling your future. You are beautiful people with the values and love for family my country has sold for another latte.
God bless you all!
