Eye Contact

Eye Contact – a grandparent’s view

Each of six grandchildren
looks into my eyes
when talking to me,

transmitting these effects and messages –

refreshment of my love for them,
confidence that I am important,
love conveyed to me,
knowledge of their intent,
detection of humor,
understanding of sadness,
insights into current emotions,

vibrancy of her or his personality,
fermentation of my self-confidence,
increase in my mental alertness,

acceptance, they of me and I of them,
observation of human complexities,
love flowing, peacefulness,
confirmation of the value of my listening,

the power of recognition – given or received,
reflection of historical family values
remembered in living cells,
happiness within the family,

the joy of realizing I am loved by two generations
one of whom I have fathered,
one of whom I have nurtured
as a member of a family
dating back to Adam and Eve.

Perhaps we should examine the ibenefits of texting.
