Excerpt from my upcoming novel:
Rosie is a woman who has recently become homeless and journals her transformation:
"The relentless wind and sun have taken turns at my skin turning it into something processed at a tannery. I don’t dare peek at the mirror when I visit the public restroom anymore. Not because I’m sad for the loss of my beauty, but because I haven’t yet gotten used to it. The unfamiliar face startles me when our eyes meet. The feeling, similar I guess to the way I've looked so unfamiliar on the occasion I changed my hair color or got a drastic cut- but this is a sturdier dissonance to measure and so for now I choose not to engage the stranger I find in the mirror. I no longer subscribe to the toxic lure of superficial beauty. I am a determined hermit crab now. I gladly cast aside the thin but attractive shell I was given but never really owned, its fragile beauty useless and decadent. My shell of choosing has the integrity of a fortress and the grace of anonymity. All of who I am can be carried within its confines."
