It's been several years since I started to identify as a Content Provider. I thought this was a better term for all the Packagers (pencil-headed academics) who need to have a tidy box in which to organize individuals, their personalities, and their occupations.
Other labels I have found attached to my shoulders; Costume Designer, Scenic Designer, (the antiquated) Scenographer, Graphic Designer, Graphic Artist, Playwright, Novelist, Writer, Painter, Printmaker, and Sculptor. Whew.
Never anything about what a damn good cook I am.
Content Provider; a cleaner, neater hipster.
"What is your process?" is a completely intrusive question . . . especially when you're in the throes of "creation" and some pencil-headed, untalented, dirty Q-tip academic wants to know what the hell it is you're doing . . . what does it all mean . . . why this, why that, this color, that color . . . EXPLAIN yourself.
--because it has to mean something . . . right . . . otherwise, it couldn't possibly fulfill any purpose let alone be immaculately packaged in a box with a label explaining exactly what and why.
There is no recipe for process . . . and that's what the Packagers want. They want a recipe so they can go back to their cubical lives and create exactly the same thing . . . making a slight, personal adjustment (that's called being creative) so that whatever it is the recipe creates will look good hanging above their tacky couches in their tacky homes. If they follow the recipe, they will be successful . . . they'll have a tangible product . . . something to be proud of . . . something they can arrogantly say to others, "It's not for sale at any price. Dealers need not inquire."
I am bombarded with images. My head fills with the most wondrous, magical, vivid and exciting thoughts . . . but I don't always know what structure these gifts desire for their transition from the radiant to the elemental.
For me a blank page is the structure, the content is the wondrous, magical thoughts I receive from the universe. Are they paintings? Are they sculptures? A new play? A new novel? Whatever they are, they are certainly stories . . . whether on canvas or paper . . . found objects or in fabric . . . in paint or through many many words in crazy crazy arrangements. Whatever the content . . . it tunes into me . . . leads me on a whacked out journey . . . sort of heading out for the territories at midnight without any headlights and fully dilated pupils . . . searching for structure.
Whatever the structure . . . blank and white --
