Tony Horwitz discovers Goodreads!
Well I'm an idiot. Somehow I'd never got round to setting up an author page at Goodreads and now that I have, I discover there are 219 fans lurking! Whomever you are, very glad to know you exist. The last time I went looking online for readers, it was because I'd heard there was a Facebook page devoted to hating Confederates in the Attic. So this is an improvement.
Now that I'm here, fans, can I pump my newest work? It's a short ebook about my oily adventure traveling through the tar sands of Alberta and along the route of the Keystone XL pipeline. A Kerouac-ian road trip with some serious reporting mixed in.
It's called BOOM: Oil, Money, Cowboys, Strippers, and the Energy Rush That Could Change America Forever.
I'm still in recovery from that trip but hope to embark on another writing adventure before long.

Yes! I've been waiting for the next book!
Wow. not just fans but readers who pay attention. Thank you.Had a fun, interesting night, speaking about BOOM and the Keystone XL pipeline to a packed library in Massachusetts. When I asked for a vote, only 2 people out of a crowd of about 120 were brave enough to say they hoped the pipeline would be built. Meanwhile, the most recent national polls say that 2/3rds of Americans support the Keystone XL.
In short, a reminder of the disconnect between coastal progressives and inland conservatives. The XL has really become a proxy for the political battle between red and blue America.
I most likely would never willingly read a book about the pipeline, if I'm being totally honest. That is unless the author who wrote Confederates in the Attic wrote a book about it, and added strippers and cowboys in the title. This is a wonderful coincidence. I look forward to reading it, and good luck in your recovery from your trip.

Thanks for all the feedback and Amber, rest assured, the pipeline is just a narrative thread, or should I say pipeline, for what's mostly a madcap adventure, much like my other books, only a lot shorter and cheaper. As for the strippers, yes I visit three clubs in BOOM (they're popular in the oil patch), and get kicked out of one of them, in skanky Williston N.D. About as low as you can go in life, getting hurled out of a Williston strip joint, though it did make for a good story.

Welcome! I just need to know...how can anyone hate Confederates in the Attic? One of the best books I've ever read! Thanks for finding us and you can pump whatever you like. Sounds interesting!
Colleen, as I recall (it was a few years ago) the Facebook page devoted to hating Confederates in the Attic was set up by a high school student who had been assigned the book for class.I've also gotten a lot of hate mail over that book, usually from diehard rebel extremists who feel I defamed "the Cause" (one such gentleman offered to publish my next book posthumously). Occasionally, the venom comes from people at the other end of the political spectrum who feel I was too kind to the neo-Confederates I wrote about. I recently got a letter from someone who asked if I was writing a sympathetic sequel called "Nazis in the Attic," about "noble soldiers who fought for their fatherland" in Germany.
It call comes with the territory when you write about the Civil War.
I live in Eastern MT, close to the action of the oil craziness; I'll be looking for your new book eagerly! Confederates is read yearly, Blue Latitudes every two years, visited like eccentric old aunts or something...I'm so thrilled you stumbled into Goodreads and decided to stay!

Mary, eastern Montana was the favorite part of my journey for BOOM, loved the little-town saloons where 6 year olds belly up to the bar, and also the fact that 12 year olds drive. Also visited a bar where patrons draw, cock, and fire like old-time gunslingers (mercifully, only wax bullets). Truly the Wild West.
You didn't by any chance swing through Jordan...because that sounds just like home. :)The bar is often the best (and only) place to eat in town. Also, I realized the other day that we never think twice about baptizing folks at Hell Creek...isn't that funny? Wouldn't you want to frame that sort of certificate?

Glad you're here. I have been a fan since reading Confederates in the Attic several years ago. I also recently read People of the Book, and realized after that the author is your wife. You're both amazing writers! Can't wait to read your new book and get started on the rest of hers.

Spoke today about BOOM to the Boston Bar Association and had to field all sorts of legal questions I couldn't answer. When I asked the assembled lawyers a legal question of my own, all I got was business cards. Guess nothing happens off the clock.
