The Amount of White Space Makes a Good Novel?!

Well, sort of.

Contemplating the amount of white space you have in your novel might never have accured to you, but its a very, very subtle component that can have massive ramifications for holding a readers attention throughout a story.

Yes, a book can be good whether it has a little, or a lot of white space; as long as the writing is engaging. But when marketing your book, white space, actually can be a very important thing to consider.

Online marketers, advertisers, graphic designers, and yes, alot of big wig authors, have a healthy amount of white space in thier material. The reason for this is simple:

It makes reading easier.

It lets the mind breath. It creates a visually pleasant, inviting page for a reader to pick up and read. I’m sure you’ve heard of people being turned off by big bricks of paragraphs page after page. Creating short, concise, and rapid sentences with ample white space is a proven way to help readers flow through your books easier; and thus retain their attention.

There are many ways to add more white space: dialogue, breaking up chunky paragraphs, and one sentence paragraphs.

That isn’t to say big sweeping epics full of brick writing doesn’t sell. It does. But only to a certain kind of reader. When deciding how much white space to put in your book, consider the following:

Which audience you catering to?

Remember, a book may take place in the mind of the reader, but the reader still has to look at it. So, a good rule of thumb:

Try to make it pleasant.
