Writer Tag

Writer Tag – I’m IT!

I was lucky enough to be tagged by YA Queen and fellow Literaticult devotee Gwenda Bond in a blog tour about writing process. Normally I don’t do these types of things, but this one’s special because I’m always intrigued by how other writers write. Here goes:

1.     What am I working on?

THE CRIMSON GATE. This is the sequel to my debut THE VIOLET HOUR and I am having so much fun immersing myself in Harlow’s world once again, this time with extra blood, guts, and creepy on the side. I was worried that writing the follow-up wouldn’t be as enjoyable, but honestly? It’s been more fun. I know the characters, I know the world, and now I just have to put the screws to them both. HURRAH! A writer’s dream.

2.     How does my work differ from others of its genre?

My Booklist review for THE VIOLET HOUR started with the line “And now for something completely different.” I hope that is something that defines every book I write.  Exotic settings, atypical characters, and slightly weird plot lines are becoming my hallmark – otherwise I get bored writing it!

3.     Why do I write what I do?

Because those are the crazy fever dreams that run through my head? I’m not sure why I hook into certain stories. The things I write aren’t always horror (the genre of my current novels) and they certainly don’t take place in the same kinds of worlds. I guess ideas just come to me and demand to be noticed, so I write them.

4.     How does your writing process work?

There are two times that I write: on my commute and on the weekends. I ride a shuttle to work an hour each way – it’s amazing how much I get done during that time. Weekends are often spent at my writing desk, especially if I’m on a deadline. Either way, consistency is the key. Doing a little bit of writing here and there during the week on an ABSOLUTELY REGULAR basis adds up lightning quick. It’s kind of crazy, actually. What else could I accomplish myself if I applied myself just 30 minutes each day? (Answer: Who cares? I just want to write!).

Okay. So here’s the part where it’s my turn to tag. Only I could not for the life of me find someone to tag. Everyone is all SCHOOL’S OUT FOR THE SUMMER SCHOOL’S OUT FOREVER and what have you. But if I rustle someone up I’ll update this post (kind of lame but whatareyagonnado?)

xoxo
