I've just finished reading Frozen in Time: An Epic Story of Survival and a Modern Quest for Lost Heroes of World War II and it was fantastic.
I marveled at the bravery of those who selflessly volunteered to try and save strangers and who risked their lives no matter the dangerous conditions and the warnings that they may not come back if they attempted a rescue. They were simply amazing.
And the men who survived for weeks, and some for months, in below freezing temperatures with gangrene, broken bones, frostbite...well, hats off to them too.
I doubt very seriously I'd have lasted more than three days, either because I would have frozen to death, succumbed to my injuries, or the other survivors would have thrown me into a crevasse when they found out I had hoarded all the provisions. That would be first on my list: grab everything you can and stick it down your pants. That would be me. Like that man hiding out with Anne Frank, the one who stole the potatoes.
