As I relaxed at home in England, drinking coffee and reading this novel, something exciting happened. I found myself standing in a dusty lane in India, clinging to my new friends while we fought off a pack of ferocious dogs. (view spoiler) but the real hero in this story is Kamala - daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. It was a fascinating look at the history and culture of India before and after Independence, and a touching story about the life of an Indian woman. Mr Varma has preserved these moments (based loosely on real events) beautifully within the pages of his book. The next time I see a red flower, I will be reminded of this story and Kamala.(less)
