About the Gullahs

If you’re in the Beaufort, South Carolina area on Saturday, July 19, you might want to check out the Premier Showing of Circle Unbroken, A Gullah Journey from Africa to America. This TV show was shot in Beaufort and the Sea Islands, the coastal region around Beaufort, and apparently stars the people it’s about. It’s going to be shown at 7:30 in the Beaufort Center for the Arts. You can call 843 521-4145 for tickets. Or go online at www.uscbcenterfor the arts.com.

I don’t know anything about the show beyond what I just told you, but I do know the Gullahs are a fascinating people who came here as slaves centuries ago, and established one of the first communities of free blacks in America. They’ve managed to keep a lot of the traditions they brought with them from Africa. The characters I write about in Georgia Bound are fictional, but they’re based on real people, and so are the rituals I write about, including the most unlikely of them all — the sho ded ting.

You can pick up a copy of Georgia Bound for just $2.99 on Kindle. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AWED0QK
