Glimpses of Truth

One of the most profound insights I gained in the Introduction to Philosophy class I took at Cedarville University, taught by Dr. Jim Greer, was that “all truth is God’s truth.” Therefore, we catch glimpses of it everywhere, not just at church or in a Christian author’s book.

Right now I’m reading Barbara Walters biography, Audition. I’m enjoying the review of history and the insights into people’s lives I’m receiving through her life’s lens.

In one chapter, she referred to an interview with actor Sir Laurence Olivier. When she asked him how he wanted to be remembered, he said, “Something like an expert workman . . . I think a poet is a workman. I think Shakespeare was a workman. And God’s a workman. I don’t think there is anything better than a workman. Or workwoman.”

And zing! the Holy Spirit immediately brought 2 Timothy 2:15 to my mind: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” I thought, Yes, Lord. Olivier’s right. I want to be an expert workman for you.

I had a similar zing! moment a few weeks ago when I was reading Maya Angelou’s obituary in Time magazine (June 9 issue). Years ago, a reporter had asked her what Angelou would like her legacy to be. Here’s her answer: “What I would really like said about me is that I dared to love. By love I mean that condition in the human spirit so profound, it encourages us to develop courage and build bridges and cross the bridges in attempts to reach other human beings.”

Immediately, the Holy Spirit reminded me that I was working on a devotion on 1 John 4, where John urges his readers repeatedly to “love one another.” “Yes, Lord,” I said. “Help me build those bridges. Cross those bridges. Help me love other people.”

Have you had any zing! moments this week when you caught a glimpse of God’s truth in an unlikely place? I’d love to hear about it.
