An Interview with the Sexy and Sweet Erzabet Bishop

Hey there, Molly Monsters!  Yeah, yeah.  It's not Thursday.  Back off.  I've had a busy few months.  Here's a Guest Thursday interview on a Monday. I am so damned happy today because I get to interview the sexy and smart Erzabet Bishop!  I first got to know this lovely author because we both contributed to the fine anthology Gratis II:New Beginnings.  I had to get to know her, and you have to get to know her, too!
I always start off with the good stuff, so what is your favorite position?
Oh wow. I am kind of partial to being behind the computer so I can dictate all my character’s naughty little habits. But I am a switch at heart. Hair pulling is a favorite, I have to say…a little spank here and there. Sigh…

Mmmmm.  If you keep talking like that, there’s no way in hell I’m going to finish this interview.  I must be strong.  (Take a deep breath, Molly…)  Okay, natural or shaved?
Supernatural ;) (Natural)
Hahaha.  Supernatural.  I like that. What made you get into erotica?
I didn’t read it for the longest time to be honest. Then 50 Shades came out. I broke down and read it and thought…I could do that. I picked up M. Christian’s awesome book on writing erotica and it led me to the ERWA site and their author resource page. From then on it’s been a journey one short work of fiction at a time.
A great many authors got involved when it became apparent there was a market and (not trying to be mean) when 50 Shades showed that the bar hadn’t been set too high. How’s it going for you?
Very well. I have been published in many anthologies, a choose your own adventure on Silk Words, the serial Club Rook, my first novella Sigil Fire and have a host of projects in the burner at all times.
I’ve read both and I love them!  So tell me, how much of what you write is from experience?
Now that would be telling…such naughty questions. *wink*
You can tell me!  I promise not to publish your answer on my blog and give you… Oh, who the hell am I kidding.  I’m a sex blabbermouth. Are there things your characters do that you wouldn’t?
Well…I don’t hang out with the denizens of Hell on a daily basis, unless you count my job as a bookstore manager…then maybe I do. Lol.
LOL.  Hell or not, if you were in that situation, would you… aw, damn!  There’s just no follow up to that.  Are there things you do that your characters wouldn’t?
Yes. I can’t see any of them wrangling my pack of hounds without pulling out all their hair or smiting them into the next century. I wonder if they would do the laundry. Note to self-ask...
That’s funny.  They might wrangle a pack of hell hounds, though. Tell us about your current project.  What inspired it?  How have you been writing it?  What keeps you motivated?
My current project is a choose your own adventure called Temptation Resorts. The inspiration is a little bit of Fantasy Island and a lot of my imagination. If I could be as naughty as I wanted, what things would I want to do on a getaway? You can do a lot with that as it turns out…My fingers are scorching the keyboards.
The story is going to be broken into two pieces. Jess and Marnie. Two girls with very different backgrounds and personalities are going to visit a wonderful retreat with some pretty toe curling activities. I have been working on it off and on for a couple of months but now is crunch time. My motivation stems from wanting the story to be the best it can be. And my editor wields a pretty good paddle. Just sayin.
Those paddle-wielding editors tend to make things interesting. What have you written that you think is the most important thing for your readers to read?
Sigil Fire is my first novella and the Club Rook series are what I am the most proud of lately. Rook especially as it is a very different format and I think once people give it a chance, they will really enjoy the urban fantasy and sexy elements of the running storylines. Sigil Fire is special because it is the longest work I have done and it is just the beginning.
What’s more important to you in erotica, the characterization or the plot?
If you don’t have a good story, then there is no connect. I would say a toss between characters people can identify with the plot. With that, the sex falls in and it blends.
I get a lot of flak because I tend to believe that porn and erotica are two sides of the same coin.  What are your thoughts?
I do too. Erzabet is my pen name for just that reason. People don’t understand the difference. Erotica is an artful story that connects with people. Porn is just to satisfy a primal urge often at the expense of someone else. I have read both and know the difference. I dislike porn as it tends to objectify women and I really, really hate that.
Well, we’ll have to disagree on that one.  I think there’s something healthy in literary objectification, but that’s a blog post for another day. Have you read much classic erotica, like Anais Nin or earlier?
Sadly I have not, but I do have some on my e-reader. Someday between my mountain of deadlines…
Ah… I now have my mission in life!  Get you to read Anais! What do you think about the future of erotica?
Lots of people want an escape from their lives. Bills, kids to shuttle back and forth, traffic, work…whatever…reading takes you away from all that. Erotica gives you that spark you felt at the start of your relationship before it became the everyday…the spice of life, just for a moment. That’s what I love about it.
What’s upcoming for you?
My upcoming list is pretty crazy. I have several Cleis anthologies slated from summer to winter, the second book in the Sigil Fire series, a Halloween story for Ylva, a twisted fairy tale, a holiday story, two urban fantasy pieces and that’s just under my Erzabet persona. Under my real name I also write music reviews, am working on two teen novels and a haunted house piece for Halloween as well.
