Part II of the Botolf Chronicles

The Witch had much of what she needed for her spell already gathered in the house. The rest she could find in Sainsbury’s fruit and veg, and the last ingredient she located growing in a neighbour’s garden.
“Is it ready?” asked a Voice from nowhere.
“Almost,” replied the witch, “it takes an exact amount of stirring to prepare the brew, so don’t interrupt, I’m counting.”

The Voice went silent and the Witch stirred the brew, watching its colour change from a sickening green to a sea blue to a brown lifeless mush. She knew she was close, she stirred some more, counting in her head, just like mother had taught her.
She reached a certain high and magical number and slowed the ladle in her hand to a crawl through the brownish goo. There it was. Just as mother told her it would be, just on the right number, a purple flick of light, a tiny bursting bubble from deep in the brew that only lasted a second, but she had seen it.

She counted and stirred some more.
