Free Education!

Free On-line education

“Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.”

Access to information is becoming so easily available and it is possible to find many very good quality sources of free education if you know how for example yesterday in the press a report outlined that “A leading independent school is making dozens of its courses available free online, so lessons can be downloaded by pupils or teachers at other schools.

The ground-breaking initiative by Stephen Perse Foundation School in Cambridge will make A-level, IB and GCSE courses available online.

They can be downloaded free through Apple's iTunes U service.

Principal Tricia Kelleher says: "The digital world requires teachers, like everyone else, to work differently."
The Stephen Perse Foundation, one of the country's highest achieving schools, has been experimenting with digital learning, with every pupil having their own iPad.
Digital text-books

The school has been building digital support materials for each subject, including video, audio, written materials and links to online resources.
These digital text-books, produced by teachers for their specific lessons, form a library of materials for pupils to follow in class and for revision.”

Another very useful resource is Future Learn. Future Learn, say they “want to inspire learning for life. We offer a diverse selection of free, high quality online courses from some of the world’s leading universities and other outstanding cultural institutions.
Our aim is to connect learners from all over the globe with high quality educators, and with each other. We believe learning should be an enjoyable, social experience, with plenty of opportunities to discuss what you’ve studied, in order to make fresh discoveries and form new ideas.
Courses are delivered one step at a time, and are accessible on mobile, tablet and desktop, so you can fit learning around your life, rather than your life around learning.

We are a private company wholly owned by The Open University, with the benefit of over 40 years of their experience in distance learning and online education. Our partners include over 20 of the best UK and international universities, as well as institutions with a huge archive of cultural and educational material, including the British Council, the British Library, and the British Museum.”

I have actually completed a few of the Future Learn Courses myself and really enjoyed them including ones on international law, neurology and forensic psychology.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology are another valuable source of free online course material available online through ‘MIT Open Courseware.

There are so many amazing and free resources available that it is a shame if people do not realise they are there and that they can access them and benefit.
