Pictures in books

It was refreshing to hear a popular TV presenter say that he liked to see pictures in books and that, when he read a page of the story, he wanted to see the related picture. However, he understood why publisher's didn't do it - because it was more expensive.

These comments were music to my ears and took me back to the time I had to decide on the format of 'The Buttercup'. The wonderful pictures were critical to the story and whole feel of the book, but running colour photographs through it makes it more expensive and also necessitates a much higher quality of paper.

I remember the discussions and quotes I had from printers, who advised that black and white photographs inserted in sections of the book was by far the cheapest option. But it wasn't 'right' and in the end I just wasn't prepared to make do.

I have no doubt that I have lost sales because of the price of the book but this is more than balanced by the wonderful letters I have received complimenting me on both the story and presentation. The Buttercup: The Remarkable Story of Andrew Ewing and the Buttercup Dairy Company See also http://www.buttercupdairycompany.co.uk/ where The Buttercup is on offer at £4.95
