My 1st book signing
Yesterday I had my first book signing at Coles in the Cambrian Mall, here in my home town of Sault Ste. Marie.
It was a lot of fun.
The manager had set up a big table near the entrance of the store. I was so glad to see that she'd covered the table with a bright red table cloth, as I'd forgotten to bring my table cloth.
She had a nice display of my books set up on the table, and more of my books were displayed right next to the cash registers.
There were two draws; the store held one draw, for a free signed copy of my book and a 10 dollar gift certificate, and I held another draw, for 3 stuffed dolls based on the characters in the book. One of the dolls was a black poodle that looked like my dog Mac, and he was very sad to see it go.
I met so many interesting new people, like the elderly lady who bought 4 copies of my book; one for herself, and 3 for her writer friends. She told me that they write poetry and short stories. I wish I could have chatted with her more, but I had to sign other books.
My Mom's best friend dropped by, and I swear, I should hire her to do PR for me, lol. She swept through the book store, telling everyone how "wonderful, beautiful, and talented" I am. It was sweet, but embarrassing...especially the beautiful part. I'm retaining water and my face yesterday was as swollen as a balloon. I usually have big eyes, but they were like slits yesterday, lol.
She told everyone that I love animals; that I have a talking parrot and that kept my 20 year old dog Annie alive for an extra year by diapering her and giving her vitamin supplements.
My Mom and Dad dropped by, and my Dad promptly set about rearranging the store. He pushed back a magazine display that he said was "blocking" me. Either the manager didn't notice, or she chose to ignore the fact that my Dad was moving her store around, thank goodness.
A lot of people came out to support me, and the manager said I did really well; even better than the last author who came to town, and he was a well known sci-fi author, who did loads of advertising. She said I sold more than he did. I hadn't expected to sell more than one or two books, so I was pleased with the results.
My next book signing will be at the bigger Mall, so hopefully that will go well too.
Now I have to get ready for an upcoming book reading, that will take place at the main library on the 28th of October.
I'll also be going into the schools to do readings and crafts, and I may also be teaching a writing class. I am a certified teacher, so that helps.
I plan to write a curriculum manual to go with the book...I just want to get a copy of the Ontario Curriculum Guidelines for 3rd and 4th grade first. My cousin Ro is a principal, and she said she'd get them for me soon.
Here are a few pictures from the book signing. These are the stuffed dolls that I crocheted as prizes for one of the draws:
