Space...is there a choice?
Every day is composed of a complex group of equations in trying to realise our goals of living on a good sized piece of land but being completely connected with civilization. We don’t necessarily need to be entertained in a big city with all the whistles and bells but we do need to be able to seek out the lines of communication and interact with others.
We love people, we love animals and we love SPACE. This blog about SPACE has been in a constant state of re-evaluation and revisiting due to its complexity. For example, we love Italy and we love Australia, however the land prices in Italy are far cheaper than Australia, and trying to buy something in Australia that is big enough and still connected is difficult. It seems that wherever you buy in Italy, there are neighbours just around the corner, so you never really feel too cut off.
So, here we are in Australia, still daydreaming about Italy and a simple way of life, but have come to the conclusion that we must, at least for now, live in Australia. That’s fine, but where do we start? A block of land in a suburb is either unaffordable when considering that we don’t want a mortgage and new estates, that are a little further out have smaller blocks that limit how your lifestyle evolves i.e. no chickens, limited vegie patch and a limit on animals.
We can go up to an hour and a half drive out of the city and find a hectare for up to $100,000, but then, if we are working in the city we have a 3 hr commute each day, and quite frankly we don’t feel that, that is what we want.
So, what other choices are there? I guess the old-school business model of centralisation has really worked its magic with cities. If, for example, the railway lines were up graded, and we had fast trains in Australia joining the regional towns and cities, it would open up things quite a bit, but it seems that big business wants to keep everybody at arm’s reach so they can boost profits, but where does that leave regional Australia and all the positive factors of a lifestyle where people have more space and a better way of life?
Let’s see. We’ve still got our eyes on the ball and are hoping to find our SPACE, wherever that may be.
