These Things of Darkness by Grace P O'Brien - 4/5 stars

These Things Of Darkness by Grace P OBrien

These Things of Darkness is a science-fiction mystery thriller that is mainly about Adam Jedermann, an agent who hunts down illegal visitors who come from other worlds and dimensions. He takes on a private assignment to find a missing woman, and is then caught up in a web of complex intrigue and characters.

I disliked this book, mainly because I didn’t become endeared to the main characters. Adam Jedermann’s attention span seemed to always flick between inconsequential events. I felt the reader wasn’t properly introduced to who he was, what his thoughts were, or how he would develop during the story. Furthermore I found the presence of Lillith to be an irritation; a seductive spirit who would torment Adam, she initially didn’t seem to have a clear purpose.

That being said, the idea of the book pulled me in and was fast-paced and extremely well-written. The world was well-constructed and explained, and the investigative nature of the plot was unique. Unravelling the mystery was fun at times when new characters or symbolic pictures were introduced, sometimes shown as images in the book.

Overall, although I didn’t like the story most of my criticism was subjective and not severe. There weren’t many serious problems with the story, plot, or the writing, indeed I was only disconnected from the main characters. It had most of the ingredients for an excellent novel, and I should otherwise have really enjoyed this.
