This is the only story by Lee that I've ever read (it's included in the excellent anthology The Oxford Book of English Ghost Stories). Interestingly, it's one of the few stories there that I personally didn't get into at all. Perhaps part of the reason is that it's a story (like Lovecraft's "The Music Of Erich Zann") that's intensely bound up with imaginatively creating the effect of listening to music. A tone-deaf reader like myself probably isn't the best audience. :-(

Some stories just don't hit that nerve. I find I reject a lot of stories for my blog because they don't strike me. A lot depends on the timing or what I want in a story that day.
