Publishing: A Headache

Me right now: ARRRRGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

LOL

Good Afternoon Folks!

I'm functioning on very little sleep. The past few weeks have been insane but the past 48 hours? Even crazier. Last night, I hit the publish button on Amazon. Uh... exactly four minutes before the deadline. Talk about cutting it close.

The downfall of setting up an Amazon pre-order? I can't make any changes. None. Nadda. Zero. Zilch. I have to wait until my book goes live and ONLY then can I do an "update" by reuploading a clean copy. In the beginning of The Sweetest Taboo I've included a note from the author. The book is written with alternating POVs. My hero and heroine tell you (the reader) their version of events. What might be confusing for some readers? The book is written in an unusual way.

You will notice that the name of my heroine, micah, appears in lowercase letters throughout the tale despite the rules of grammar. This occurs when she refers to herself and when Rick refers to her. micah refers to Rick using capitalized pronouns. You will also notice when referring to Himself, my hero, Rick, uses capitalized pronouns but when speaking of, to, or about micah, He uses lowercase pronouns.

Long story short? When anything in direct relation to Rick is mentioned, it's capitalized. When anything in direct relation to micah is mentioned, it's in lowercase type.

This will undoubtedly drive some of my readers crazy. CRAZY. But, in some D/s circles, this is common when writing text. It is not the standard, and not all people use this method when writing. Some even take umbrage to its usage. I chose this method to denote the Dominant and submissive dynamic in the relationship. This style of writing will not be everyone’s cup of tea and I am fully aware of that fact; however, it is authentic to my writing process.

Why am I pulling my hair out now and the book hasn't been released? Autocorrect is the devil. Things that I know I've fixed have been reverted back to their original state (e.g. I missed the capitalization of a pronoun) btw, I'm nuts for writing this way. I'm making the few corrections before uploading to B&N, iTunes, other outlets etc. since those sites haven't imposed a pre-order deadline like Amazon.

FYI: Amazon requires authors upload a final copy of their manuscript 10 days before your release date. I've been doing edits for the past three weeks so I was literally down to the wire with uploading. If I had missed the deadline, there would be no Thanksgiving release date as promised. LOL cue the pitchforks!

For my Kindle readers: I can't upload a new copy until the release date which is 11/27. Some people are willing to overlook typos, I'm not one of those people. This is my first venture into publishing. I am also a perfectionist. If I ask people to pay for a story, readers should feel that they've received their money's worth. I wouldn't ask you to purchase a product if I didn't feel it was the best I could offer. I haven't even sent out my ARCs yet because I want my readers to have the best experience with my book! As a voracious reader, a typo throws off the story for me. I'm sure others feel this way as well. I wrote this blog post to give you all the heads up and to ask that if you pre-order The Sweetest Taboo (once the link is live) please make sure you've set up your Kindle account to enable updates on new editions of books when they're available. This will ensure that you receive the clean copy that you were meant to have.

I'm nuts for publishing but I believe in "my baby." My story is unique and I think readers will appreciate the time I've put forth to get you a decent read.

I'm also pretty darn transparent. I believe in being honest with readers. I'm a reader before I'm an author and I want to save you as many headaches ahead of time as possible.

I thank each and every one of you for your support. I'm stoked that people want to read about my characters. It warms my heart that people care. This story was something that came to me and I really wanted to see a well-written love story from a kinky perspective. D/s and BDSM isn't the norm for most people but it is the norm for many. I wrote this story because I wanted to showcase a bit of "normalcy" mixed in with kink and romance.

LOL and I've made this post wayyyyy longer than I intended. I'll shut up now.

Best,

Harper
