BUTTERCUP EXTRACT - LIZZIE FORRESTER AND THE CRACKED EGGS

'There were few perks at the Buttercup but Bill McCondichie recalls his mother, Lizzie Forrester, telling him that any damaged eggs could be taken home by the shop staff. Lizzie worked at the Buttercup branch in Darvel, some twenty-five miles south of Glasgow. “It would have been about 1915, when she was fourteen years of age,” said Bill. “Times were hard in her family; the men had gone to war and she was one of four children being cared for by her mother.” Lizzie said that her mother was delighted with the boost to the scarce family food supply – so much so that when there were no cracked eggs available, Lizzie learned how to crack a few more! Bill adds that many years later she still felt embarrassed about it and, passing the shop one day, she exclaimed: “I hope God will forgive me!” The Buttercup: The Remarkable Story of Andrew Ewing and the Buttercup Dairy Company
