Randomhouse Reading Bingo - 2014

This is my first blog post here! Anyway, this year in addition to the Goodreads reading challenge, I also took up the Randomhouse Reading Bingo challenge.
I was shooting for a full card because I had also pledged to read 35 books this year. I'm pleased to say I filled the card this weekend (even though I still have 2 more books to read in order to reach 35). Without further ado, here's what I read!

Starting with the B's:
A book with more than 500 pages: The Green Mile by Stephen King
A book written by someone under 30: Red Rising by Pierce Brown
A book with a one-word title: Huntress by Malinda Lo
The first book by a favourite author: Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce
A book your friend loves: Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen

I's:
A forgotten classic: Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews
A book with non-human characters: Witchwood by A. R. Lloyd (though not the only book I read this year featuring non-human characters)
A book of short stories: Alabaster: Pale Horse by Caitlin R. Kiernan
A book you heard about online: The Ape's Wife and Other Stories also by Caitlin R. Kiernan
A book that scares you: Darkwing by Kenneth Oppel (I have to say there were a lot of moments that filled me with dread)

N's:
A book that became a movie: The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells
A funny book: Unmade by Sarah Rees Brennan (she lures you in with the humour, then stabs you while your guard's down)
Free Space: Choral by Karen McLaughlin (it's Canadian!)
A best-selling book: Sweetness in the Belly by Camilla Gibb
A book that is more than 10 years old: Only Living Witness by Stephen Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth

G's:
A book published this year: Steles of the Sky by Elizabeth Bear
A book by a female author: The Invisible Orientation: An Introduction to Asexuality by Julie Sondra Decker
A book set on a different continent: The Grey King by Susan Cooper (takes place in England and Wales)
A book based on a true story: Family Outing by Chas Bono (as true as it was, at the time)
The second book in a series: Shattered Pillars by Elizabeth Bear

O's:
A book with a number in the title: Seventeen Tomatoes: Tales from Kashmir by Jaspreet Singh
A book with a mystery: Alfred Hitchcock's Solve-Them-Yourself Mysteries by Alfred Hitchcock
A book of non-fiction: The Sacred Balance: Rediscovering Our Place in Nature by David Suzuki
A book at the bottom of your to-read pile: House of Orphans by Helen Dunmore (I think I found it on the curb 8 years ago)
A book with a blue cover: Fire Bringer by David Clement-Davies

There is a bit of overlap within the categories (books over 500 words, female authors, non-human characters, etc). I especially liked that it encouraged me to work away at my to-read pile. Here's hoping I fill another card next year!
