The Worst Pickup Line In History
For ten years I was an active real estate broker. My first day on the job, another broker stopped me outside my office, looked me up and down with obvious lascivious intent, and said, “You are a red hot property with lots of curb appeal, and you show real well. You might be a great addition to my inventory.”
My first thought was, “Oh, that’s the worst pickup line in history, but I could use that in a novel.” So for the next decade I asked every broker I met, “What are the funniest, saddest, and scariest things that ever happened to you in this business?”
The Red Hot Series of novels was the result. Labeled as romantic comedy, the books follow the misadventures of a rookie real estate agent, a plucky young woman from the wrong side of the tracks, who relies on her street-smarts to forge a new life. The series introduces the most popular characters I've ever created: sassy Molly O'Molly, dynamic Valentino DeMitri, and the awesome Australian Shepherd, Talisman.
The characters in these novels aren’t real, but many of the events are. And, it appears, the craziness is universal in the real estate industry. When I toured to promote the book, brokers from all over the country stopped me to ask how I knew about so-and-so in their office, or the eccentric client and/or lender they were working with.
That said, I do candidly admit Molly O’Malley is my most autobiographical character to date. Unfortunately, when I met my obnoxious pick-up artist my comeback wasn’t nearly as witty as Molly’s. She shot him her most plucky grin and said, “I don’t think your down payment is large enough to handle it.”
From Monday December 1st through December 5th the first novel in this series, Red Hot Property, will be free for Kindle on Amazon.
