Leaving You Hanging ?

Pasty Underalls sighed and cast her watery blue eyes around the gleaming walls of her hypoallergenic prison.
"Now I'll never be able to tell Studley Stewrite how I really feel about him." She mumbled as a tear rolled down her transparent porcelain doll cheek, dragging bits of mascara with it.

In the background, Dr. Maestro grinned and tapped his music stand. One, two, three, and the band began to play the oomph-pa-pa that would transport her over the edge into insanity.

"Is this how the book ends?" Asks the reader. "Oh... wait, this is a series. I have to buy another book to see if she's rescued."

Many authors have adopted this -- ending the book with characters suspended so the reader wants more.

Do you think this is lazy writing (it's harder to tie up all the loose ends) or just good marketing?
Are you disgusted or do you buy the next book?
