Turning the Clock Back to 1925

I'm so enjoying revisiting this era for my latest novella that I've neglected my Jill Barry blog. So here are a few snippets that were hot in January 90 years ago. For you Scandi fans, Norway's capital changed its name from Christiania to Oslo. Cricketer Jack Hobbs got his 2000th test run and in Rome, Mussolini formed a new Fascist cabinet. Miriam Ferguson was sworn in as Governor of Texas. But the news that film star Gloria Swanson married the Marquis de la Falaise de la Coudraie was the item that probably interested the film fans most, whether they were upper class flappers or maids and cooks in service. Class barriers were hard to break through and it's this issue I explore in my current work. Romance, how to find it and maybe how to avoid it, underpins the story, of course. The action takes place around Christmas - third time in a row for me - so I haven't yet shaken off the glitter or munched the last piece of Christmas cake. Watch this space! I hope your 2015 has got off to a very good start.

Jill Barry Hi. I've been such an infrequent visitor but thought I'd break the ice (again!) by posting my latest book review. It's always great to find an exciting book by an author not previously known and I'll definitely be returning to Jane Harper. No, I haven't given up on romance, just straying now and then...

The Dry by Jane Harper was a recent choice for our local library book club and I was particularly interested, having spent time in Melbourne and other parts of Victoria. As an author (and reader) of mainly romantic novels, I set the bar high when it comes to reading crime and suspense, so I'm delighted to say I was drawn into the story right from the beginning. Aaron makes a very likable hero and the author uses personal experience to create the landscape, so we feel we're right there, in that 'quiet' backwater town. No spoilers but the fact that Aaron returns to his former hometown and the effect this has on recent events makes for a fascinating page-turning story. I will read more Jane Harper!
