Writer to Writer: New Things and Old Things Like New Again
At Mount Ararat 2014 New Things and Old Things Like New Again IN THE WORLD: Istanbul is cold and rainy. Politicians are being assholes. I like Cutthroat Kitchen.ON THE PLAYLIST LATELY: Old Paul McCartney and Wings. Lots of them. Really enjoying it. Also Roger Waters solo albums are great for writing. My baby like Bob Geldof and Nora Jones too, so I am feeling lucky.
There is more going on these days than could be imagined. Rather dream like if the truth be told.
A new baby (my first). A new novel (my third). My wife still loves me, my family still puts up with me, and
the writing is going well. What is there, really, to complain about?
There is a big difference between being a writer and being a writer with a child. I see that now. Every sentence counts now in a way it did not before. Not in a creative way, no, I do not mean like that. Creatively, every sentence has always mattered. Creatively speaking, every sentence is all there is. The succession of sentences and structure is all that matters.
What I mean is that every sentence counts from an output perspective. It becomes a matter of "So, you still wanna write for a living? It's easy to live on the sly when you are single and flexible, not so much with wife and child. SO, if you wanna write and make this a career, then you need to produce. You need ideas on paper and you need to refine them. You need more words and more ideas and more preciseness, more energy, less tell and more show.
Produce. Produce more. Polish. Polish. Produce and Polish.
I am busier and more stressed out than ever, but it is an amazing time as well. Busy and stressed do not sound like they could possibly mix together into happiness but, in a pleasant turn of events, this time they do. I am pretty fucking happy. Anchors No More is literally around the corner.
Sample chapters and RELEASE info coming mid-February.
It is time. Time to time travel.ANCHORS NO MORE is ready to go. I am so excited to offer my new novel for your reading eyes and thinking minds to enjoy.
I had a lot of fun writing it and I am pleased with the energy and pace I sustain throughout. The fact that an earlier version originally appeared as a weekly serial (one chapter a week for 46 straight weeks) really lends to the 'grab you and keep you glued' vibe. Plus, there is a lot of straight up action, gun fights, running, and hiding, mixed in with my usual love of speculative technology, the future of biological and mechanical intertwining, the nature of being and experience, and a touch of political critique.
Did I mention there's lots of gun fights?
What is the word on the street concerning the 53,000 words (224 pages)
that comprise this new, original, tale?
- "amazing..."
- "masterful..."
- "pure old school Saturday matinee stuff..."

Writing and writing: what are you working on? The past month has seen a major re-arranging of priorities and schedules. My beautiful son, Michael Jiwan, was born. This, needless to say, has had immediate and major impact on my writing and projects. New priorities and all.
Now that Anchors No More is officially out of my hands and in the process of global release (gotta love the internet), I can turn my hands back to various other projects.
The project I am most excited about is getting back to work on my fourth novel, a 110, 000 word science fiction novel titled The Swill. This book is a doozy, and I think it may even be the first of at least a two part series, maybe even a trilogy. It depends.
Two book series at least. That is called a duology, I believe, if I remember my Timothy Zahn correctly.
In addition to finishing up the first draft of The Swill, I am working on two new feature length scripts (a thriller/survival story and a romantic dramady).
Again, produce, produce, polish. prune, produce, and polish.
Music has been slow lately. Jamming with friends sometimes. No show scheduled. Enjoying playing for my son. It generally calms him down. It works for me too.
Cheers and keep doing what you are doing. Stick with it. Make it work.
