Syria, two years on

Remembering Aleppo: I wrote this piece about Aleppo, Syria, exactly two years ago. I later included it in The Nine Horizons: Travels in Sundry Places, which was published a year later. But it was originally intended as a blog post. I lived for years kin Aleppo and wanted to tell people that it was not an anonymous flashpoint on the evening news, but one of the most ancient and extraordinary places on earth. I'm glad I didn't know that, two years on, things in Aleppo (and Syria in general) would be even worse.

Kevin Cole This was very nice to read. I also appreciate your clear and easy style.

Years ago, I was online friends with a women from Aleppo. Her name was Fatima and she owned her own shop. Every time I hear about Aleppo in the news, I wonder what happened to her. Or maybe I don't really want to know.

Mike Robbins She may be OK, Kevin - it's a very strange situation, with barrel bombs falling into the street all the time, a firing line down the middle of the city, and some people just trying to get on with life. I do know that there has been considerable damage though, and the ancient souk has been hit.
