Well, with the movie of 50 Shades of Grey having been out for a little while now, it has been interesting to see the reaction from both 50 Shades fans and newbies to the franchise alike.
Overwhelmingly, those who have read the book are reporting disappointment; that is if you believe the posts on social media and in the press.
Comments include boredom, being too drawn out and a turn off. Unsurprisingly (as far as I am concerned) the underwhelming reaction has been from women. They feel that the interplay between the characters isn't brought out. Men too however, who have run the gauntlet to watch the film, have commented that the sex scenes are not up to much.
The above shows an interesting but well known dichotomy between the sexes in how they prefer their erotic sex portrayed. A large percentage of modern men tend to prefer "in yer face" porn style erotica (I know of some exceptions to this sweeping generalisation) whilst women tend to like their erotica to be character based. This is best done in books. In a book, an author can relay things that no film can capture. The emotions conveyed are far more deep and subtle than any actor, no matter how gifted they are, can relay. It is this cerebral approach to erotica that turns women on. In the purely visual element of porn the biggest sex organ (the brain; sorry guys) is conspicuously absent.
This dichotomy is well grounded in science as men prefer visual clues to a woman's fertility and attractiveness. Women however base their selection on more emotional criteria such as intelligence, security and other more nebulous qualities. A well written erotic book recreates this form of thinking in handfulls, focusing on the emotional reaction of characters to the situations they find themselves in. It's not just about the pump and grunt.
In my view no film, no matter how lavish the production, can match the written word for real erotic excitement. That is why I love to write erotica.
