One of the things I've loved most about putting EVERY UGLY WORD out into the world is how often readers recognize the flaws in Matt, Ashley's best friend, and love interest. My goal was always for him to be a realistic character--a guy who could love her, but could also hurt her, even if he didn't mean to. Because my life experience says even the people who love us most will always hurt us sometimes.
I've been working recently on a novella (short novel), written from Matt's point of view, showing the events from prom-night forwards (even a little beyond the climactic chapters of EVERY UGLY WORD) from his perspective. It's been interesting for me to really dive into his head, remember what he was dealing with during Ashley's story, and also to get to the bottom of what was driving his choices.
My question is, is Matt's point of view interesting to YOU?
I'll be posting this as a discussion on the book page also, because I'd love to hear your perspective. Please feel free to tell me your thoughts. Brutal honesty is welcome :)
Thanks for reading!
