Here is the syllabus for W.H. Auden's class in 1941.  I hope they had Cliff's notes back then. And plenty of them. Though, to be fair, some of the stuff is actually pretty good. A lot better than the PC nonsense they make you read today.

I would have still used Cliff's notes, though.
