Excerpt from The Ice Diamond

From The Ice Diamond, the sequel to The Legend of Wild Horse Beach:

The thick woodland known as The Trap spread out from the base of Crystal Mountain and extended across the centre of Pteris to the edge of the Forest of Tears. Deep snow and ice covered the woodland, its weight bending tree boughs to the ground in places. Like the mountain that rose high above it, The Trap glittered in Herec 1’s pink light, giving the enticing, but entirely false impression of soft, serene beauty.
Many creatures of The Trap were still asleep, buried deep in warm hibernation dens. Some existed in suspended animation in the freezing mud of gradually defrosting rivers, waiting for the warmth needed to reanimate. Others slumbered in hidden nests in the snow covered branches of trees. Icy webs strung across the forest floor held creatures that had never existed before that winter, the wind rocking them as they slept. And one creature existed only in the mists above the land and had no need for sleep.
