Introduction
I thought I'd try my hand at writing a blog, and Goodreads seemed like a good place to do it. I've never done this before, and I haven't put much effort in this direction until now. I did initiate a blog tour for my recent books, but that was unusual for me. I don't have a lot of time to do this. I like to spend most of my free time working on my writing, but eventually authors do have to advertise and publicize their work, and engage the public. Not my thing, normally, but I would like for people to read my books, so...
I would love to know what people think about my writing - what they like or don't like. If enough people tell me they want more action and less "navel-gazing" by characters (something I personally am partial to), then I will consider that in my future writing.
I really don't know what kind of person will be reading this blog - are you writers like myself, or readers interested in knowing more about authors and how they work? Let me know.
My fiction-writing skill is a work in progress, so this blog will be somewhat of a chronicle of my journey. I will comment on what I'm writing and what I've written in the past - what I like about it or don't like, why I make the choices I make in writing.
I always think it's interesting to go back and read an author's first book, and compare it with their later writings. It sometimes isn't as good as their more mature offerings that came later, after they had more experience writing. Writers do go through a learning process over the years. Good writing doesn't just happen overnight, out of the box from day one in perfect condition. I can see now, in looking back at my first novel, SCHISM, that it could have been a lot better, and the current project I'm working on, a crime novella set in China, is going to address those issues. I really like many of the individual scenes in SCHISM, but the plot as a whole should have been more complex, with more subplots, and more characters. It was probably a little too dark and ambiguous for many readers. By the way, for those of you who are wondering about THE DISSENTER, that is the first edition of my first novel, and it is no longer available. I rewrote it, with a new title, SCHISM, and a new cover. I have not been able to remove it from Goodreads so far, so I know that might be a little confusing. I don't believe Goodreads policy allows removal of titles, but I will try again, in case I am just too technically challenged to do it.
