I read this one years ago, but I honestly didn't care for it (mainly for reasons that are impossible to explain without resorting to spoilers!). Personally, I find the author's work a mixed bag; but I do think his story "Requiem" is outstanding. That one is included in the excellent anthology Famous Science-Fiction Stories: Adventures in Time and Space.
