As a reader is it the theme or the plot of a novel that carries universal and lasting impact?
Plots certainly make the book interesting even fantastic. But I believe themes resonate and bring readers back over and over.
Just look at how many people enjoy reading noir or Christian themes. Two radically different themes which are appreciated by the select followings.
Your love of a theme may become a mild addiction. If you are an author you need to read in your genre and theme to remain current. Also if you are author you need to read outside your genre and theme to be revived with new experiences.
Creativity may be a cold shower.
