“Ye, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me”

Heidi said a short prayer under her breath as she smelled death in the air. The blood and tears were flowing heavy from her swollen eyes but she could still see her attacker standing over her. It was her fiancé Jayson. His eyes were burgundy red and the expression on his face was almost demonic. In the seven years that she’d known him, Jayson had never raised a hand to Heidi. But tonight, without warning, Jayson punched her twice with the force of a mule kick. It had felt like every pound of his three hundred plus pound body had rushed to his cantaloupe-sized fists. The hits instantly knocked her to the ground where she was now lying on her back. It took a few moments for Heidi to stop seeing double. She regained her eyesight just in time to watch Jayson’s size thirteen boot swing from her left side and kick her square in the ribs. The pain instantly rushed from Heidi’s stomach to every inch of her frail body. She screamed in pain.
“Please God! Stop, Jayson. What are you doing?” Heidi’s voice was weak.

As if he were hard of hearing, Jayson totally ignored Heidi’s call for mercy. He reached down and grabbed her by the shoulders and pulled her face closer to his. Heidi could smell the foul aroma of spoiled alcohol on his lips. She was looking directly into Jayson’s eyes when his dilated pupils sent a chilling shockwave through her body. It was almost as if he were possessed with some foreign emotion that she had never seen. He opened his mouth and the scent of his drunken breath spilled out in a rush.
“I always knew you was a foul bitch, High. But how the fuck could you do this to me?” Jayson’s deep voice vibrated through Heidi’s body. “Huh?” Jayson grunted. “How the fuck could you do this to me? I gave you everything.” Jayson was talking really slowly. His tone was even yet angry. He didn’t raise his voice once. Most of his words got snagged on his lips in a slur. Jayson’s eyes began to swell with tears. “That nigga, he told me everything High!” Jayson cynically whispered. “Everything!” Heidi nervously stared at Jayson. She was petrified.
“He?” Heidi whispered. “Who is He? And what are you talking about?”
Jayson totally ignored Heidi’s questions as he continued to blast her with accusations. “And the worse part about it is…I was ‘bout to marry yo foul ass.” Jayson shook his head. He looked down as if ashamed. “Fuck you, High. I mean that. Fuck you!”

Jayson’s lips began to quiver. He was crying now. Heidi was terrified at the sight of her fiancé losing control. She sensed that something terrible was just minutes away. She tried to react but she was so weak. Jayson’s grip on her shoulders was alligator tight. She didn’t want to pull away from him believing that Jayson would get even angrier. She made another attempt to bargain with her fiancé. She gently placed her hands on his powerful arms and tried to calm him down.

“Jayson, listen to me. I’m hurt bad baby. I need to go to the hospital.” It pained Heidi to talk. The punches to her face had caused her jaw to swell instantly. Sensing that she was running out of time, Heidi tried to ignore the pain and continued pleading.

“Everything is going to be fine, Jayson.” Heidi said as the tears began to flow uncontrollably now. The pain from her face and stomach were becoming all too real. “I need some help.” Heidi continued. “I don’t want to die Jayson, not like this. Please.”

Jayson slowly looked up to Heidi. The intensity in his eyes seemed to calm as he was becoming remorseful at the sight of his battered fiancée. Feeling like she was making some progress, Heidi decided to end the conflict there and then.

“Please Jayson. What ever I did to you, I’m so sorry. Let’s work this out.” Heidi whispered. “Please don’t be mad at me baby.”

With her last words Jayson became enraged. He smacked Heidi with a crushing force and threw her back to the floor. Jayson stood to his feet and started screaming at her.

“Don’t try to handle me, High! I’m not ya fucking baby anymore! You hear me?” Jayson kicked her again. This time the toe of his heavy boot connected square on her chest plate. Heidi tried to scream but she couldn’t. The pain was fierce. Jayson continued to yell at her.
“You been handlin’ me for the past seven years. Never again! You hear me bitch? Never again!” Heidi squirmed on the floor. She tried to yell for help but the brutal kick seemed to take all the remaining air out of her lungs. She tried her best to breathe but nothing was coming in. Heidi instinctively turned on her side and tried to open up a passageway. It didn’t help. Her body started reacting to the lack of oxygen. Heidi felt so much pain as her stomach contracted violently in search of a pocket of air. After a few moments Heidi was breathing again. A pinch of air managed to flow into her lungs. Despite feeling like she was breathing through a straw, the air felt like heaven to Heidi.
Jayson stood over his fiancée and stared at her. A devilish smirk grew on his face. He almost laughed at the fact that she reminded him of a fish out of water. The pain in her face brought pleasure to his heart. Jayson could be a cold individual at times. But tonight he was showing a more dangerous side. The mixture of alcohol and rage began to take over his consciousness. With each deep breath, more and more images of torture and destruction entered into his mind. All of a sudden he turned toward the kitchen. As if being called by some imaginary voice, he quickly stepped over Heidi’s limp body and darted out of the living room. He was moving like a man on a mission.

Back in the living room Heidi was taking very short breaths to stay alive. She tried to yell again but her body wouldn’t let her. The internal injuries were more severe than she could have imagined. Sensing that these would be the last moments of her life, Heidi closed her eyes. She could hear Jayson tossing pots and dishes around in the kitchen. With each crash her heart pounded harder and harder. She said another quick prayer to herself and forced the ugly images of her fiancé out of her mind.

Jayson’s footsteps brought her back to reality. She cracked her eyes opened just in time to see him walk in front of her. Her vision was blurry but she could still see him pouring what she thought was water all over the living room. Her nose made a more troubling revelation. It was lighter fluid. Jayson was mumbling under his breath. Heidi made one last attempt to move her arms and legs but they were heavy as bricks. The harder her heart pounded, the more her lungs struggled to search for air. The adrenaline was too much for Heidi to bear. Her eyes rolled back in her head. The last image Heidi saw before she blacked out was her fiancé Jayson pulling out a cigarette lighter and setting the curtains ablaze.
