Dependant 'R Us

We humans, collectively, have a problem. Actually, individually and regionally we have lots of problems, but we all share this one. There's getting to be too many of us, too fast. I don't know the exact number of us there are at any given moment, but let's use the number 7 billion as a talking point, here in 2015.

That number isn't the problem. Feeding that number is. Some of us have anything we want to eat, while others want anything they can get to eat. It's a real problem, and we all know it. Those of us that have enough, prefer to not think about it too much, because it's unpleasant. For those that have none, that's all they can think about, and it's very unpleasant.

My non-fiction series of books that have done quite well for me; " The Urban Rabbit Project " addresses some of the inefficiencies and problems we have with our current meat protein supply chain around the world, and offers up some options to remedy some of them.

Currently, here in the States at least, we rely on giant corporations, farming massive amounts of land with really big, really expensive, fuel guzzling machinery to grow corn and cereal grains. Then we rely on oil based transportation to take these crops to centralized mills and animal feedlots to process them. (Let's follow the meat now) Then we rely on that transportation again to take the animal to the slaughter house. We rely on electricity to keep the meat cool or frozen. Transportation again to get the meat to the distribution center. Electricity again to keep it cool or frozen. Transportation again to get the meat to the grocer or food establishment. Transportation again to get you to the grocery store. Electricity again when you get the meat home to keep it cool or frozen. Whew! Get the picture? And the rest of the world wants to be like us?? We need to cut out some of these steps, expenses and dependencies.

Folks are "waking up" and realizing that we need to make a change somehow, because population experts are telling us that by 2050, there should be somewhere near 10 billion of us! We know that we are already "overly energy dependent" in feeding ourselves. That's why there are SO many great stories written in the Dystopian and Post-Apocalyptic genres based on EMP events. Cut the power to wide expanses of land, and after about 3 days, that whole system falls flat on it's face. Everybody is equal. Nobody has anything to eat, and it quickly gets real ugly everywhere. We all kind of know about that possibility. We've heard lots of shouting about that lately.

At the same time, there's something else quietly going on that only a few of us have heard whispers about. Science, trying to genetically modify our crops so they grow fast enough, on the land we already farm, so we can grow enough of them, to feed those 10 billion mouths. Not enough people are asking hard questions, and demanding answers about this. There are a lot "what ifs" that go unanswered. We'd better watch 'em!

So, I've been doing a lot of thinking about what could happen if "we didn't watch 'em good enough" and turning it into my first fiction series where I build a world with the potential for a different dystopian future, that creates a " Genetic Apocalypse ".

Carolyn Carr The Self-Inflicted series is really a good read. It makes you think about what could or will happen. I can't wait for the next book to come out.
