Researching a novel

I am looking for background details for my next novel. I have chosen a real place for the main actions. I have images courtesy of Google Earth. I have drawn site access routes using Gimp.

It is all beginning to look like a cartoon; what I mean is the hours and hours of work for the few minutes that you see in the end picture. The iceberg concept also comes to mind; you only see 10% of what went into the concept.

So you get diverted in the construction of a building just because you want a few sentences to highlight the problems, explain the accidents and deal with delays. Just how far do you go to get authenticity?
