Writing poetry is one of those activities that all human beings should do. Well, not really, but humans are imaginative creatures and humans are creatures of word. One of the activities that all human beings should do is create, whether that means writing a poem, telling a story, painting a picture, sculpting an ash tray, building a birdhouse, planting a garden, or snapping photos, humans should create.

Because humans are so fond of words, though, creating something that gives us the opportunity to play with words is an incredible way to develop ourselves as humans. To this end, I am joining a few other bloggers, and I invite you to join us, in writing a sonnet a day for the month of August. There are no rules, but you are invited to share a link to your blog in the comments of this post as well as in the comments of the other bloggers who are participating (one of them can be found here). She adds this information:

The rules are simple, and the poetry does not have to be sublime. The purpose is practice and discipline, not profundity. One sonnet per day for a month: 14 lines, Italian or English form.

Gerard Manley Hopkins, give me courage:

Shakespeare, give me nerve:

Internet, give me grace.

Join us. You can share your sonnets as comments on the various participating bloggers or on Facebook and other social media sites.

May I also recommend visiting the above blog and reading the sonnet she shared as an example? You’ll be glad you did.
