Speed Bumps

I don’t know for sure, but it seems like some people cruise along the road of life with a perpetual full tank of gas, green lights one after another. If there’s a road closed or traffic they hit a button on their GPS and with a turn of their wheel they’re cruising again.

And then there are the other people. They always only have a little less than a quarter of a tank. Their lights always turn from green to yellow right at the point of no return. Their GPS is either not working or sends them around in a circle. There are speed bumps and flat tires, their spares are threadbare and they have no idea where the flipping tire iron is. They didn’t renew their AAA and no one will answer their cell phones to help.

How does this happen?

I am sure that some of the people in the green light category are better planners and are maybe borderline OCD with making sure their well-oiled machine runs smoothly, or maybe they’ve done everything to ensure they have time/money/resources to fix what’s broken…and to them I say good for flippin’ you. You’re awesome. I want to be just like you when I grow up.

And I’m sure that in the speed bump category there are those who are at fault. Those that are lazy and don’t want to get gas. They took their tire iron out to smash a spider and didn’t feel like putting it back. Last time they had a flat they rode their spare for two weeks because they didn’t have time between napping and snacking and playing video games to get a new tire. AAA was too much money and they’d rather spend it on a night out with their buddies, and their buddies and family are the same and never answer their phones.

But what about the in betweenies? What about those people whose life is filled with one speed bump after another whether it’s their fault or not? What about those people who never plan ahead but everything they do works out?

It’s not even always about negative and positive attitudes. I think I have a pretty positive attitude about life and I think my husband does too (without being those sickly sweet, irritatingly positive people who look like they’ll eventually crack and take everyone they know out with them), and we have our health, which is awesome, but we get plenty of speed bumps. Right when we get ready to start a good savings plan and budget, his overtime gets taken away which has never happened. We get the car that has a recall but the thing that is recalled is not the thing that’s the problem, related but not covered. He gets his hours back but the guys in the vanpool don’t, so now he can’t carpool. The things I want to save money on I can never find coupons for. The kids colored on the walls four days into getting a new apartment. My washing machine broke a week after the extra insurance I got for repairs ran out and they don’t offer that coverage anymore.

When I was younger I got bit by a black widow in my sleep when everyone says if you don’t bother the wild animal it won’t bother you!

We felt good enough about our income to have another child and then we got identical twins which is not genetic and was not even an inkling in my mind because my brother already has identical twins which would bump the chances of us having identical twins to 2 in 500! (Which is totally cool and more of a blessing than anything but still fits into the “what are the odds?!” sort of scenario. I wouldn’t trade my extra kid for anything.)

Why are things so much more of a struggle to some than others?

I still haven’t started my website yet. It’s not a lot of money but it’s a chunk of money and we have a lot of catching up on bills to do and my son still needs new school shoes after growing out of last years and spending the summer in flip-flops. We got all the school supplies we needed and some new clothes. Last thing on our list is shoes.

No new book sales but there have been a couple of borrows in the lending library so that’s always exciting. Especially when I see that they stopped reading and started reading again the next day which means it was good enough to pick back up. (See the positivity?)

Writing this blog is a lot more fun than I thought it would be at first and thank you for taking the time to read through the things floating around in my head at any given time. Next time I will probably be writing about trying to organize some sort of preschool curriculum for my girls.

Have a lovely rest of the week and leave a comment if you have any answers!

And if any of you want to check out my book, here is the link.
